Hydroelectric

Hydroelectric power plants use the flow of water on rivers to power turbines and generate electricity. Hydro plants currently provide 12 percent of the state’s electricity. Within New Hampshire, nearly all of the hydro potential has already been tapped; however, there are vast hydroelectric resources being developed just over the border in Canada that could be accessed through the construction of high-voltage power lines.

Hydro Advantages
  • Time-tested technology
  • Offsets the use of fossil fuels
  • Canadian hydro could provide a significant influx of renewable energy to the state
Hydro Limitations
  • Not always available (e.g. during droughts)
  • Nearly all of the hydro potential in New Hampshire has already been tapped
