Lighting
Given their cost to operate, there is little reason to use standard incandescent light bulbs in a new home. Compact fluorescent lighting (CFL) and other types of fluorescent lighting reduce energy use by 50-70%. Halogen lighting, which is ideal for recessed lights and areas where direct lighting is desired, yield a 50-70% gain in efficiency over incandescents.

Recessed Lighting
If recessed lighting is to be installed in insulated ceilings, be sure to use insulation cover (IC) rated fixtures that allow insulation to be placed in direct contact with the fixture to reduce heat loss.

Sensors and Dimmers
Use motion sensors to control outdoor lighting. Solid state dimmers and multi-light level switches increase energy efficiency and are available for most types of lighting. Consider using motion sensors in storage rooms, laundry rooms and other seldom-used rooms in the home.
