Landscaping for Energy Efficiency
Choose the right plants and trees and locate them in the right locations and you can save up to 25% on your heating and cooling bills.

Here in the Northeast, you can block winter winds by planting rows of evergreen trees and bushes north and northwest of the house. For maximum results, plant them so they are two to five times their mature height from the home. Never plant evergreens to the south since they'll block the winter sun and reduce solar gain.

To provide a pocket of quiet air, which acts as insulation, plant shrubs and bushes near the home, making sure to allow a minimum of one foot of air space between mature plants and the home.
