Stop the Leaks Think of an energy-wasting home as an air-leak engine with hot air leaking into the attic through lighting fixtures, plumbing vents, chimney chases and attic access hatches. As the heat moves out, it causes cold air to get sucked in through rattling windows, electrical outlets on exterior walls, around leaky door seals and up through openings in the floor from the basement. To increase energy efficiency, your job is to shut the air-leak engine down. You do this by sealing the “envelope”—the exterior of the house which, when sealed adequately, can give you large gains in energy savings.
