The Project
Northern Wood Power at Schiller Station is an innovative power-generating plant built by Public Service of New Hampshire.
PSNH replaced an existing 50-megawatt coal-fired boiler with an environmentally friendly system that uses wood chips and other clean, low-grade wood materials for fuel. Located at Schiller Station in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, Northern Wood Power allows PSNH to economically produce cleaner electric energy from environmentally sound renewable resources.
To our knowledge, Northern Wood Power is one of the largest renewable energy projects in the US, and is the only one replacing fossil fuel-generation with an equivalent amount of cleaner, greener electric power.
Results
By converting the fuel source for power generation from coal to wood chips, Northern Wood Power positively affects New Hampshire's natural and economic environments:
- 50 megawatts of cleaner, greener electricity-enough to power approximately 50,000 New Hampshire homes
- Reduces coal use by more than 130,000 tons annually
- Reduces thousands of tons of emissions each year
- Reduces dependence on fossil fuels by transitioning to a locally available renewable fuel source
- Provides a new and significant wood chip market for New Hampshire's forest industry
- Customer rates have been protected by the construction cost of Northern Wood Power through the sale of Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs)
