Renovating a 90 year-old power plant meant that there would be several environmental
issues to address. To do the work required, the Environmental Remediation Department
of Northeast Utilities worked closely with the New Hampshire Department of Environmental
Services. Before restoration could begin, a 640,000 gallon underground concrete
oil tank had to be removed. Also, soil contaminated with fuel oil and coal had
to be removed, treated and deposited off site in an approved landfill.
In the building itself, asbestos insulation and lead paint were painstakingly
removed. Environmental engineers conducted test borings in the floor to make
sure there was no ground contamination directly under the building.
This
oil tank (shown here during construction) had to be removed, along with
contaminated soil before building restoration could be completed.
